The curriculum encompasses all planned activities that we organise in order to promote every aspect of learning. It includes the formal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework is taught in Nursery and Reception and the National Curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6 plus an extensive range of activities designed to enrich the learning of all children and enable them to grow and develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally.
Our curriculum also includes the development of ‘cultural capital’ to enable children to learn from the school’s ethos and distinctive Christian character. We aim to teach children how to grow into positive, responsible individuals who can work and co-operate with others to achieve their true potential and succeed in life.
The St Bartholomew’s Way
Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of our pupils and the context within which they live. By maximising the extensive natural environment around the school grounds, our curriculum is broad and balanced but also exciting and inspiring. The curriculum aims to encourage children to ‘see the world’ through trips and experiences linked to their learning. Every opportunity is taken to promote an active lifestyle and to encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own health and well-being.
A positive attitude to learning permeates the school with high expectations, appropriate levels of challenge and support, and equal access to all components of the curriculum. A coherently planned text driven curriculum is sequenced to provide the knowledge, skills and understanding that all children need for future learning and to lead happy and fulfilling lives. Pupils’ academic ambition is important and every child is supported to become independent and self-motivated members of society with Christian values and core British values instilled in them.
The National Curriculum
The National Curriculum is the framework by which we teach and learn. It sets out the programmes of study and attainment targets for all subjects at all Key Stages. The Key Objectives are set out for us to develop children’s learning and ensure progression. In this area we aim to keep parents and carers informed of the children’s Key Objectives for learning, so that you are able to support your child and have an understanding of how the teaching and learning process is structured.
The teaching of Phonics to our youngest children follows the Department for Education validated programme Twinkle Phonics. Families of Early Years children and Key Stage 1, will be invited to an annual phonics parent’s workshop. Please look out for further details throughout the academic year.
